Startup Portfolio Reports: What Angel Investors Should Measure

Angels do not owe LPs a glossy deck. They still need a report: a freeze of the book they can trust. This is what to measure, in language that matches how Investech actually presents the dashboard and reports.

Portfolio summaries

A summary is six numbers and a list, not a narrative. Investech’s strip: invested, portfolio value, average MOIC, weighted IRR, hit rate, realised proceeds, unrealised gain, open positions. If those do not reconcile to the table beneath, the report is decoration.

Company status reporting

Active vs archive vs target. Instrument. Last update date. Missing certificate. “All good” vs “action needed” on SEIS/EIS. Status is operational, not a traffic light you invented for a slide.

Investment performance records

Per name: cost, mark, MOIC. At book: averages and weighted IRR. Charts help when they use the same data: year-end invested, annual MOIC, sector concentration. Do not import a public-market beta into a 12-name angel book.

Capital invested

Sum of cash that left your account, by date. Follow-ons add. Realisations reduce open cost, not the historical invested chart — be explicit which number you are looking at. Currency: record as paid; do not silently FX-convert without a rate and date.

Follow-on investments

Report follow-on cash separately so you can see whether reserves are going into winners or into denial. Each follow-on is a new ledger line. See angel portfolio tracking.

Reporting dashboards

The Investech home dashboard is the default report. Export or accountant share when someone else needs the freeze. Visible.vc-style IR suites are for funds; Investech vs Visible explains the split.

Investor review processes

Monthly: actions and missing files. Quarterly: concentration, reserves, names you would not follow on. Annual: tax pack. Write decisions down on the company. Software cannot make you look; it can stop the pack from being a weekend project. Category page: angel investor portfolio management software.

FAQ

What should an angel portfolio report contain?

Invested, current value, MOIC/IRR, open vs realised, concentration, list of names with instruments and marks, tax-scheme exceptions, and open actions.

How often should I review?

A light monthly check for missing files and stale marks; a deeper quarterly read of concentration and follow-on reserves. Private marks should not be theatre.
